31 December 2021 – Following the recent announcement by YB Tan Sri Datuk Seri Panglima TPr. Haji Annuar bin Haji Musa, Minister of Communications and Multimedia (KKMM), telecommunications companies Celcom Axiata Berhad (“Celcom”), Digi Telecommunications Sdn Bhd (“Digi”), Maxis Berhad (“Maxis”), U Mobile Sdn Bhd (“U Mobile”), Telekom Malaysia Berhad (“TM”) and TIME dotCom Berhad (“TIME”) remain committed to supporting flood-impacted Malaysians. Collectively, the industry has allocated more than RM25 million to support flood relief efforts.
Conscious of the critical need for connectivity during this period and to ensure those impacted and emergency responders can stay connected, the telcos have been working around the clock to restore sites that have been damaged by the floods. This includes working with local authorities and councils to place fixed or temporary equipment to ensure connectivity, including at critical locations such as relief centres. To date, the telcos have restored 99% of services and mobile network repairs in all floods impacted areas.
The telcos are working closely with several organisations including NADMA, Malaysian Relief Agency, Malaysian Red Crescent Society, Yayasan Kebajikan Negara, IMAM Response & Relief Team (IMARET) and Mercy Malaysia, as well as GLC/GLIC Disaster Response Network (GDRN) to deploy aid to those impacted by the flood, such as food boxes, hygiene kits, clothing, financial aid and more. To offer support for their respective customers who have been impacted, each telco has committed to ease their customers’ burden via a range of initiatives that vary from free GBs and airtime, restoration of fixed and mobile connectivity to bill relief. Affected customers can contact their respective telco operators to find out more about their respective support initiatives.
The telcos have also recently committed to support KKMM’s industry flood relief initiative, OPS Bantu Hingga Selesai, which has commenced for five days starting 29 December. Under this project, the telcos are deploying volunteers from their respective organisations to assist with cleanup efforts and other support needed at homes heavily impacted by the floods in Selangor, namely Taman Sri Muda (Shah Alam), Bukit Changgung (Sepang) and Taman Sri Nanding (Hulu Langat).
“We appreciate the collaboration between the Ministry, NGOs and telcos in coming together for the OPS Bantu Hingga Selesai. It is an important initiative to quickly address these badly affected areas with all the support that they need. With the help from volunteers being deployed, we sincerely hope that the impacted individuals and families will return to normal life as soon as possible,” said YB Tan Sri Datuk Seri Panglima TPr. Haji Annuar
The telcos are also extending their support to affected employees through various types of financial aid, while dealers are being assisted with clean-up efforts of their premises.
The industry continues to monitor the situation 24/7 and work with the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) and other relevant authorities to support the rakyat and help overcome this difficult time together.
