U Mobile, with the support of EDOTCO, has unlocked digitisation opportunities at major transport hubs with the deployment of 5G in-building coverage
This latest 5G deployment milestone means U Mobile’s customers and overseas travellers will be able to enjoy the telco’s ULTRA5G experience seamlessly across the entirety of the various terminals, rather than being limited to hotspot-based coverage
In conjunction with Visit Malaysia 2026, U Mobile has also launched its first ULTRA Tourist Plan that offers 100GB of free ultra-fast data to international tourists
This initiative is part of U Mobile’s broader 5G expansion. As a start, 5G indoor coverage is available at six key transport hubs — namely KL International Airport Terminal 1 (KLIA Terminal 1), KL International Airport Terminal 2 (KLIA Terminal 2), Kota Kinabalu International Airport (KKIA), Langkawi International Airport (LIA), Penang Sentral and Terminal Bersepadu Selatan (TBS), with more locations to come.
Tourists, staff and visitors who are U Mobile customers will be able to enjoy the telco’s ULTRA5G experience across the various transport hubs, made possible by its advanced 5G in-building coverage (IBC) solutions, supported by EDOTCO’s infrastructure. Unlike hotspot-based coverage, which is limited, U Mobile’s 5G IBC solution means 5G experience will be seamless as it will be available throughout every floor and facility of all six terminals, a first for Malaysian transport hubs.
In light that this year is Visit Malaysia 2026, the telco also unveiled a first-of-its-kind ULTRA Tourist Plan which offers international tourists free 100GB of ultra-fast data for 24 hours. Overseas tourists just need to scan a QR code and register for the eSIM to enjoy the benefits. This initiative intends to showcase the positive 5G coverage experience that Malaysia has to offer to the country’s foreign visitors.
To launch U Mobile’s indoor 5G deployment at major transport hubs as well as the ULTRA Tourist Plan, a ceremony was held at KLIA Terminal 1 and officiated by YB Dato’ Fahmi Fadzil, Minister of Communications, YB Teo Nie Ching, Deputy Minister of Communications, and Yang Berusaha Chua Choon Hwa, Deputy Secretary General (Tourism), Ministry of Tourism Arts and Culture.
During the event, U Mobile showcased Malaysia’s first ‘live’ 5G Redcap camera streaming on the telco’s ULTRA5G network. The purpose of the demonstration is to highlight that with 5G connectivity, this type of surveillance camera may be deployed anywhere, at lower network resources consumption such as power and bandwidth which leads to lower deployment cost. Traditionally, surveillance cameras need to be running on wired and WiFi and U Mobile aims to reinforce that it’s next-gen ULTRA5G connectivity is able to fulfil that connection bringing flexibility in terms of deployment.
During the ceremony, YB Dato’ Fahmi Fadzil, Minister of Communications, shared the significance of U Mobile’s 5G deployment, “This milestone reflects Malaysia’s strong progress in expanding high-quality 5G connectivity in high-impact locations. Seamless in-building 5G coverage at our major transportation hubs strengthens the foundation of our digital economy, improves service delivery, and ensures that both Malaysians and visitors experience world-class connectivity from the moment they arrive.”
U Mobile’s Chief Executive Officer, Wong Heang Tuck, said, “U Mobile is committed to the digital ambitions of the country and has been aggressively expanding our 5G coverage across townships and states. We have also played an active role in digitising various verticals by deploying indoor 5G coverage across various buildings, enabling seamless 5G connectivity at critical facilities such as hospitals, convention centres, government offices and retail hubs. Today marks another huge milestone as we are delighted that our ULTRA5G experience is now also available indoors at key transport hubs such as KLIA Terminal 1, KLIA Terminal 2, KKIA and LIA, as well as Penang Sentral and Terminal Bersepadu Selatan.”
Heang Tuck adds, “With the support of EDOTCO, we have deployed advanced 5G in-building coverage solutions throughout all floors and facilities of the various transport hubs, ensuring seamless and uninterrupted 5G for customers, tourists and staff. With our 5G infrastructure in place, it unlocks digitisation opportunities as these transport hubs may now enable services like AI-enhanced surveillance and robotics for improved service delivery. Our target is to deploy indoor 5G to over 600 IBC sites across Malaysia by second half 2029.” During the launch ceremony, Heang Tuck also highlighted that the latest indoor coverage expansion is just part of the company’s broader rollout strategy to equip key transport hubs across Malaysia with advanced 5G connectivity, supporting digitalisation in the sector and contributing to the nation’s digital economy.
EDOTCO’s Chief Executive Officer, Adlan Tajudin, said, “This deployment reflects a fundamental shift in how digital infrastructure is designed for national impact, and EDOTCO is pleased to support U Mobile in delivering seamless indoor 5G coverage built for scale and long-term public value. High-traffic public assets such as airports and integrated transport hubs require scalable infrastructure designed for continuous innovation, enabling consistent high-quality services while unlocking smarter operations and new digital capabilities. As the steward of shared digital infrastructure, EDOTCO ensures that critical national spaces are underpinned by trusted, future-ready foundations that enable operators like U Mobile to deploy efficiently and consistently, in alignment with Malaysia’s economic and nation-building priorities.”
Commenting on U Mobile’s tourist plan for Visit Malaysia 2026, Deputy Secretary General (Tourism) of the Ministry of Tourism, Arts and Culture (MOTAC), Yang Berhormat Chua Choon Hwa said, “MOTAC commends U Mobile’s commitment to elevating international tourist experience with the ULTRA Tourist Plan. The 100GB of free ultra-fast data is a gesture of Malaysian hospitality that ensures our visitors stay connected with their loved ones, from the moment they land. This innovation will support the success of Visit Malaysia 2026, showcasing our nation as a premier, top of the mind destination. It is an example of how our industries are coming together to make the ‘Malaysia Truly Asia’ experience more seamless, shareable, and memorable for the world.”
Looking ahead, the company plans to expand its indoor 5G coverage to additional transport hubs in 2026 and they include Kuching International Airport, Penang International Airport, Sultan Ismail International Airport, Sultan Ahmad Shah International Airport, KL Sentral and JB Sentral, amongst others.
