KUALA LUMPUR, 23 October – U Mobile, Malaysia’s best 5G network provider, has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Malaysia Rapid Transit Corporation (MRT Corp) to explore the provision of 4G and 5G in-building coverage (IBC) at the Immigration, Customs and Quarantine Complex (ICQC) in Bukit Chagar, Johor Bahru. The complex forms a key part of the Johor Bahru-Singapore Rapid Transit System (RTS) Link.

The collaboration will help to ensure that this important cross-border transport gateway is ready to provide reliable mobile connectivity when the RTS Link commences operation, supporting a more connected and convenient travel experience between Malaysia and Singapore.

The RTS Link is estimated to carry approximately 40,000 passengers daily upon opening. As a key component of the RTS Link, the ICQC will serve as an important transit point for cross-border commuters and visitors. Reliable mobile connectivity within the facility will be essential to support everyday travel needs, from accessing journey information and coordinating onward transport to staying connected with family, colleagues and businesses. The initiative will also support the connectivity needs of approximately 600 government agency personnel currently based at the complex.

Under the MoU, U Mobile and MRT Corp will explore the commercial, technical, and operational framework required to provide 4G and 5G in-building coverage within the ICQC. The collaboration will allow U Mobile to connect its network to MRT Corp’s IBC infrastructure and extend its 4G and 5G coverage throughout the facility, subject to a definitive agreement, technical requirements, and relevant approvals.

Beyond enhancing mobile connectivity, 5G IBC can also provide the foundation for future 5G and AI-powered digital use cases within the complex, supporting smarter building operations, greater operational efficiency and an enhanced passenger experience.

Wong Heang Tuck, Chief Executive Officer of U Mobile, said, "The RTS Link represents a major step forward in strengthening cross-border mobility between Malaysia and Singapore, and reliable mobile connectivity will be an important part of the travel experience. Through this collaboration with MRT Corp, we aim to extend U Mobile’s 4G and 5G network coverage throughout the ICQC, helping government agency personnel, commuters and visitors stay connected at this important cross border gateways. This initiative reflects our continued commitment to extending quality digital connectivity across strategic public infrastructure and high-traffic locations, supporting Malaysia's digital and economic growth."

Datuk Mohd Zarif Hashim, Chief Executive Officer of MRT Corp, said, “The experience of travelling on the RTS Link begins well before passengers board the train and continues long after they disembark. Every touchpoint matters, from the ease of moving through our facilities to the ability to access information, communicate and make travel arrangements without interruption. At a major cross-border gateway like Bukit Chagar, getting these details right is fundamental to delivering the standard of service our passengers should expect.

“Our collaboration with U Mobile is part of a wider effort to bring the right expertise and services together to make that experience possible. Reliable mobile connectivity is an important part of modern travel, and we want it to be seamlessly integrated into the passenger journey.”

The collaboration demonstrates how transport infrastructure and telecommunications providers can work together to enable smarter, better connected public facilities for businesses, government agencies, and the travelling public. It forms part of U Mobile’s ongoing expansion of quality connectivity across strategic public infrastructure and high traffic locations, with its 5G IBC footprint now spanning more than 250 sites nationwide.
